Roger Federer is the ‘gentleman’ of tennis. The Swiss legend has won numerous titles and laurels throughout his illustrious career. His attacking forehands and audacious single-handed backhands have enthralled the tennis fans for more than 20 years. Beyond those, however, he’s also the most beloved player of all time.

His performances and his personality have not only been praised by the fans but also by his fellow players. Tennis greats have lauded Federer for the simplicity with which he dominates his opponents. Recently, an ITF legend opened up on his time with the 20-time Grand Slam champion on the tennis courts.

ITF Legend Toshi Matsui wishes to practice with Roger Federer again

Toshi Matsui is a 43-year-old Japanese professional who’s the oldest active player to hold an ATP ranking. To give an idea of how long Matsui has around, he played his first ITF level match in 1993, 9 years before Emma Raducanu was born.

The Japanese veteran revealed the details of his first meeting with the Swiss maestro. The two crossed paths at the Japan Open in 2006. He said, “Anytime we met after this, he always had kind words for me. Wherever I traveled on the Tour, if I had the opportunity to see him training I always checked it out.”

Further, Matsui added, “He is still playing at the highest level and how Roger is able to manage his mental motivation and psychical strength after so many years behind him…it is more than amazing. One of my wishes is to hit with him again. It’s gonna be fun, especially now when we both are over 40.”
