Years after his retirement, Andy Roddick can’t stay away from tennis. Such has been the love for the sport that Roddick has had over the years. While he regularly features in tennis podcasts, talking about trending topics in the tennis world, there were also rumors that he had begun his coaching career with Jessica Pegula last year. However, the American legend clarified that they just practiced together for a few days and he wasn’t Pegula’s coach. A year later, Roddick broke his silence on coaching Alexander Zverev.
The German star had a wonderful Australian Open campaign where he finished runners-up to Jannik Sinner. Despite the tough loss in the summit clash, Zverev put on gritty performances right throughout the tournament. During the Served With Andy Roddick podcast, Kim Clijsters asked Roddick if he was open to coaching Zverev.
However, the American legend declined and said, “I discussed my previous coaching experience with my wife, uh like, 12 like 15 minutes ago, on this podcast. It didn’t end well, um, and also, like, it’s the same as you, like, I’ve actually reached out to you as I’ve been talking to other players and said would you have any interest in coaching, and you said like you just I think we’re in the same boat where time and geography matter more to us than anything else right now.”

Meanwhile, Pegula wasn’t the only one that Roddick was linked with as a coach. Ahead of the 2024 season, Gauff trained with Roddick during the off-season. The American legend helped Gauff to improve on her serve which had become a major weakness of her game. Meanwhile, Zverev’s father has been the coach of the Australian Open runner-up since childhood. Thus, with a stable coaching team, it remains unlikely that Roddick will join Zverev as his coach.

Nonetheless, it was another occasion where Zverev came close to winning a Grand Slam title but fell in the final hurdle. Recently, legendary coach, Patrick Mouratoglou suggested what he needs to do to win a major title.
Mouratoglou identifies the areas of improvement for Alexander Zverev
The 2025 Australian Open was the third time that Zverev lost in a Grand Slam title. Earlier, he had also reached the finals of the 2020 US Open and 2024 French Open but fell in the final hurdle. As a result, Mouratoglou opened up about the things that Zverev needs to work on in order to win a Grand Slam title.

He said, “I don’t think that Sascha loses this Grand Slam final, at least the last one, because he doesn’t believe enough. I think he does believe. But I think that there’s still things he’s lacking in his game. He improved, for sure. He’s No. 2 in the world now, he came back stronger, and I think he added a lot of things to his game. When it comes to the big moments, he lacks being bold, being aggressive, taking the risk, taking the match, really taking it. He pushes himself to do it but it’s not natural yet. I think he needs more time. I think he needs to do it more and more and more and more and find better efficiency.”
