Matteo Berrettini and Ben Shelton, the two maestros of tennis, have finally finished the Monte Carlo Masters and will most likely prepare for the Barcelona Open next. The two players have shown consistency on clay and will be well-prepped for the next chapter. However, right now the tennis stars are enjoying their time after the tournament and have been giving us some clues about their potential vocations other than tennis.

In a recent interview posted on Instagram by a major Tennis Instagram page, Overtimetennis, the interviewer asks several top Tennis names about their potential ‘desk jobs’ if they hadn’t been tennis players. Most players had some very interesting responses. But Ben Shelton’s answer has become a full-blown topic of discussion.

Probably be a car salesman. I sell cars, yeah.” Well, just imagine Ben Shelton being a 9-5 car salesman. The same player, known for his aggression on the court and wild celebrations, would just step into a car showroom to sell cars. Frankly, that’s a sight no one would want to see. Mainly because in that scenario, we would never get the “hang-up-the-phone” celebration. We would also never see a player with the audacity to openly criticize the opponents.

The tennis star added later about his dynamism in sales too. “Honestly, any vehicle I could sell (Air) planes, trains, boats, automobiles, all of it, buses.” On the other hand, Matteo Berrettini chose a whole different profession.

When the interviewer asked Matteo about, “If you had to work a desk job what would be it?” The Italian thought for a moment and asked back the interviewer softly, “How do you say when people getting divorced?” The interviewer then helped Matteo and said, “A divorce lawyer?”

To which the Italian replied back, “Yes, a divorce lawyer.” Just as the 29-year-old finished his sentence, a big “Better Call Matteo” sticker popped up in the video. It gave us a glimpse of the kind of path Matteo might have taken if he hadn’t become a tennis player.

But, let’s be real here. Can anyone really imagine Matteo as a lawyer? I mean this is a guy who’s “Italy’s sweetheart.” He is someone who gave us a reason to watch tennis even more after fighting through his injuries. His humble and charismatic persona is a joy to watch. Along with that, he brings unmatched intensity to his game. Surely, as a lawyer, Matteo wouldn’t have done all these things, right? Tennis is clearly where he belongs. Let’s look at a few moments that show it’s the perfect fit for him.

Matteo Berrettini’s incredible resurgence on clay

Matteo’s 2025 is no secret. The guy defeated the world no. 2 Alexander Zverev in a major upset in the recently concluded Monte Carlo Masters. One of the most exciting matches of the tournament. It was Matteo’s biggest win by ranking and his fifth win against a top 5 player. The Italian performed incredibly and advanced to the round of 16. However, there he lost against Musetti, who ultimately progressed to the finals.

The defeat that Musetti handed to his compatriot wasn’t actually easy to take. Musetti broke down after the match. The match showcased raw emotions pouring in, as the finalist Italian said: “I believe in myself more than before, which allows me to react to adverse situations. Sometimes, I am so eager to prove things that I end up blocking myself.”

He added, “I can’t afford so many ups and downs and distractions, and I must be able to fight without losing level. I have always been seen as the handsome guy who doesn’t put on his work overalls and doesn’t know how to endure. I want that to end; I am willing to get my hands dirty in every match.”

Matteo may have lost to his fellow countryman, but he’ll be aiming for a stronger performance at the upcoming Barcelona Open. The tournament runs from April 14 to 20. The 29-year-old has a good record on clay. And Barcelona is another clay tournament, he’ll be looking to deliver even more moments of brilliance there.
