The American tennis star, Frances Tiafoe, is finally receiving the appreciation he deserves for his impressive work on the court this year. A plethora of fans showered praise on Tiafoe for his incredible performance at the Grand Slam tournament in New York. Tiafoe outshined some great players, including the Spaniard, Rafael Nadal, in order to reach the semifinal of the US Open. Notably, the American’s current tennis campaign has arguably been the best of his career.

However, during a recent incident at the Davis Cup Finals, Tiafoe received sharp criticism from an Italian tennis legend. Adriano Panatta, who was there at the event as a commentator, slammed Tiafoe for his behavior at the match. The American fanbase, however, was not impressed with Panatta’s criticism of Tiafoe. As a result, a plethora of fans united in order to slam Panatta on social media.

Fans react to the Italian tennis legend’s criticism of Frances Tiafoe

The American tennis star recently represented his country at the Davis Cup. In a contest between the United States team and the Italian team, Frances Tiafoe played against Lorenzo Sonego. During the tie, Tiafoe was spotted wearing his headphones during the national anthem recital.

This prompted the Italian tennis legend, Adriano Panatta, to slam the American for his behavior during his country’s national anthem ceremony. Panatta was there for the event as one of the commentators for the quarter-final match between Tiafoe and Sonego. Tiafoe was met with sharp criticism from the former Italian tennis player. Panatta criticized Tiafoe by saying, “He is rude. If I were his captain, I would kick him in the b*tt”.

However, the American’s fanbase was not impressed with Panatta’s brutal comment on the US Open semifinalist. Notably, one of the fans slammed the 1976 Roland Garros winner by saying, “Adriano Panatta is f**king stupid.”

Meanwhile, some of the fans took the Italian tennis legend’s harsh comments as an issue of nationalism. Notably, one of the fans criticized Panatta by saying, “nationalism is disgusting and i would applaud him if he didn’t stand up for the anthem at all.” Others also chimed in with similar reactions.

Tiafoe’s previous performances

Prior to the Davis Cup, the American tennis player also faced the Italian tennis star, Lorenzo Sonego, in the round of 64 at the Paris Masters. With his brilliant performance, Tiafoe defeated Sonego to proceed to the next round of the event. In the next round match, the American knocked out Jack Draper.

The US Open semifinalist went on to beat the Australian tennis player Alex De Minaur in the round of 16 matches. However, the Canadian tennis star, Felix Auger-Aliassime, beat Tiafoe in the quarter-final match of the tournament.
