The 6-time singles Grand Slam champion said, “He was even more impressive than I had imagined – his charm indescribable, his charisma extraordinary. Having chatted with us before dinner, he changed the seating plan. Although Mandela’s remarks made Becker ‘shiver’, fellow guest Agassi tried to defuse the emotional tension.

Even Agassi’s ex-wife, Brooke Shields, who was also among the guests, asked some careless questions and was later ignored by Mandela. Becker said, “And Brooke Shields was similarly carefree: ‘Where are the best streets for shopping?’ Mandela pretended not to hear them and told us how he used to fish on Robben Island and supply himself with fish and mussels. Day in, day out, year after year, mealie porridge and fish, mussels and mealie porridge. ‘And fate would have it that at my first state dinner I was served mussels.’ Only then did he get back to Andre’s question: ‘I know nothing about restaurants.’”
