Andy Murray and classic dry Brit wit go hand in hand. Recently 36-year-old British tennis star suffered an early exit from the  Shanghai Masters in a 6-3,6-2 defeat to Roman Safiullin. But as with many things involving Murray, there was a silver lining to the dark cloud. His compatriot Neal Skupski made sure his fans didn’t miss his humor game.

Neal Skupski has been enjoying his time in Shanghai as he defeated Mackenzie McDonald and Frances Tiafoe along with his doubles teammate Wesley Koolhof in the Round of 32. The 33-year-old recently shared a story on Instagram with the 2011 champion in Shanghai. A championship which Murray fans might well want to forget, despite his win. But Murray created a laugh-out-loud moment for all his fans to cherish what could be the most disliked trophy of his career.

Andy Murray wins the battle but loses the war

When players win a tournament, they get medals, trophies, and prize money. But in China, there is a unique practice at the Shanghai Rolex Masters. So, after Andy Murray won the tournament in 2011, a statue of him was erected. The statue depicted Murray more as a warrior than just a player, with a peculiar war-era hairdo and a frown face. Who’d have known that this statue would be a talking point even after 12 years of his ‘win’?

Recently, Neal Skupski posed with this warrior with a tennis racket in hand at Qizhong Tennis Center in Shanghai. Murray who’s known for his humor games on and off the field, quickly jumped into the scene and mocked Skupski back saying, ‘What’s your left hand doing Nelly?’. The two-time Olympic gold medalist doesn’t leave a chance, does he?

It’s quite difficult for a sportsperson to nurture his funny character. The nature of the profession is such, that it never lets you take any situation lightly. The environment is mostly competitive in a field or court. But Murray is among the exceptions, as he has always been an entertainer on and off the field.

Murray couldn’t resist checking out the electronic chair during a pre-tournament practice session. Muzza is known for his dry sense of humor and it can be seen in his on-court antics, funny press conferences, and social media updates. Even his impersonation of fellow tennis players is top-notch.

In the serious world of tennis, a touch of humor can sometimes help to release the intense pressure that players find themselves under. Andy Murray knows it more than anyone else.
