There’s always a bright side to an event where several uncertainties are looming over it. That’s the case for Australian Open 2021 as the pandemic is playing spoilsport with the tournament’s smooth commencement. However, tennis fans will rejoice over the fact that Roger Federer will be returning to the circuit after almost a year of a layoff!

Roger Federer last played a competitive game at the Australian Open 2020. He fell at the hands of Novak Djokovic in the semis and underwent knee surgery in February. Further complications called for yet another procedure, which the 20-time Grand Slam time abided in June this year. 

Andy Roddick made a recent appearance on ‘Tennis Channel’s’ live session where he mentioned what one can expect from Federer as he gears up to compete in his 23rd year as a professional. 

“The thing with Roger is, he’s going to get to Australia similar to when he got there in 2017. That’s kind of the comparison to be made. He missed six months and came back, came through, and won the tournament,” Roddick mentioned.

Andy Roddick on why the Australian Open courts suit Roger Federer

Federer has six AO titles in his trophy cabinet so far. The most recent ones came in 2017 and 2018, which is why many believe he has a chance to triumph again.

Novak Djokovic will be the most dominant competitor when the tournament begins, but Federer might just find his magical form once again.

Andy Roddick has faced Federer several times during his playing days. They created one of the most fierce rivalries in tennis and met each other at the Australian Open twice, with Federer dominating both encounters.

Thus, the American has a greater knowledge as to why the Swiss Maestro is brilliant at Melbourne. Roddick mentioned that there is a “quickness” that prevails in the hard courts at the Australian Open and further said this: 

“It was a little slimy, you could get through with the serve a little easier. He [Federer] wants to court to be very fast when he arrives in Australia. That makes his game planning a lot easier. He doesn’t have to get into extended rallies.” 

“Confidence matters. It is going to be interesting. I’d like to see him, the tennis world would love to see at least a shadow of the Federer we know. I’m assuming these surgeries don’t get any easier to come back from when you’re 39 years old,” Roddick further added. 

Roger Federer has played some sublime tennis at the Australian Open in the past. Nonetheless, it will be a massive task to reach the last four when the tournament kick starts in 2021. Fans are eager to watch him return to action and there would be no greater satisfaction if he ends up winning the Grand Slam.
