With a major part of the 2025 season done and dusted, players are surely feeling the heat of a long and tiring year. This can be seen from the fact that many players, including Jack Draper and Ben Shelton, have gone down injured at the ongoing US Open. And another disastrous moment struck men’s tennis as Flavio Cobolli was forced to retire midway through the match against his compatriot Lorenzo Musetti. Cobolli was trailing 3-6, 2-6, 0-2 in the third round encounter when he decided that he wasn’t good to continue and put a strain on his body.

It all occurred after Cobolli had a nasty fall earlier in the match and hurt his arm and wrist in the process. As a result, he found serving and shot making difficult, which could be seen from the scoreline. Moreover, a comeback looked difficult for Cobolli, even if he had decided to continue, as Musetti was all over him. As a result, Cobolli put the brakes on the match and shook hands with his compatriot, crashing out of the US Open in a saddening fashion.

Meanwhile, Cobolli received treatment on his arm after the fall, but the pain was too hot to handle as he eventually decided to call it quits. After the match, he revealed details about his injury setback, saying, “I had some cramps the other two matches in my fingers and also in my hand, but I played without any problem. Today I started my practice and I played without pain, but when I tried my serve I felt something not comfortable in the arm and it [got] worse in the match.”

However, Cobolli wasn’t the first star to retire midway through the match at the US Open. Yesterday, Ben Shelton pulled out of his encounter against Adrian Mannarino due to a left shoulder injury. It was a disastrous end to a wonderful campaign for Shelton, where he looked good to dig deep in the tournament before injury issues cropped up.

Coming back to Cobolli’s encounter, his opponent, Musetti, didn’t want the match to end this way. After their encounter, he had some kind words for his opponent.

Lorenzo Musetti consoles Flavio Cobolli post US Open encounter

While Cobolli was down injured, it was tough for Musetti to see his compatriot struggling. The two had hoped to put on a thrilling encounter, which didn’t go according to plan owing to Cobolli’s injury. Nonetheless, Musetti encouraged his compatriot with some kind words post-match.

He said, “Honestly I didn’t want to finish like that, especially against Flavio, who is probably my best friend on Tour. We know each other since [we were] nine years old and we know pretty well the families. We spend many, many hours together on the court and off the court throughout our careers. So first of all, a big round of applause to Flavio, please.”

Further, Musetti added, “It’s a bittersweet match and a bittersweet end, but of course I’m happy to be in the fourth round for the first time. I think I played a really great match until the last point. Of course Flavio, I could see that from the second set he was struggling a bit, but it was still tough to play against him and I wish him the best of luck to recover soon and to be healthy again.”

While Cobolli would hope to recover from his injury quickly, Musetti will face the winner of the match between Jaume Munar and Zizou Bergs. The match can be followed on EssentiallySports’ Live Blog. Can he dig deep at the US Open? Let us know your views in the comments below.
