‘All talk, no motion’ is what a fan called out Frances Tiafoe with as he shared glimpses of his practice session on the hard courts. Such has been a disappointing season for the American star, that he failed to live up to the promises made to his fans. What’s more, his decision to skip the Paris Olympics didn’t go down well with his fans either. However, Tiafoe will look for redemption as he begins the second half of the hard court season.

Frances Tiafoe vs Aslan Karatsev: Preview

After a decent 2023 season where he made his top-10 debut, Tiafoe has had a season filled with inconsistencies. With half the season over, Tiafoe is yet to win a title this year, with his best result coming at the ATP Houston, where he reached the summit clash. However, he lost a close contest against his compatriot, Ben Shelton, as a title eluded him. Although raising hopes for a good show at Wimbledon, Tiafoe bowed out of the tournament in the third round. Thus, the Atlanta Open provides Tiafoe with a chance for redemption as he looks to win a title on his home soil.

Like Tiafoe, Karatsev too has had a poor 2024 season. While he missed the earlier part of the season due to injuries, Karatsev has had a string of first-round defeats in recent tournaments. Before the Atlanta Open, Karatsev lost each of his last 5 encounters. However, putting his experience into play, the 30-year-old outplayed Billy Harris in the first round at the ATP Atlanta. Finally back to winning ways, Karatsev might prove to be a tricky opponent for Tiafoe.

Being on the tour for long, the duo has met each other multiple times on the ATP Tour. However, their matches have often been keenly fought. Tiafoe and Karatsev have played against each other thrice, with the American star prevailing on two occasions. Interestingly, all of their three encounters came last year as Karatsev will look to level his h2h record against Tiafoe.

They first met at the French Open last year, with Tiafoe making a glorious comeback from a set down to win his second-round encounter. Subsequently, they again met at the Citi Open, this time on the hard court. However, the result was no different, and Tiafoe won both the tiebreakers to win the match 7-6 (5), 7-6 (5). Nonetheless, Karatsev avenged his defeats against Tiafoe at the Japan Open where he defeated the American star in straight sets.

Prediction: Tiafoe to come out on top

Ahead of the Atlanta Open, Tiafoe has had lengthy practice sessions as he aims to find his groove on the hard courts. Additionally, with the support of the local crowd, Tiafoe looks like the favorite to win the contest in straight sets. On the other hand, Karatsev will be looking for any slip-up from Tiafoe and capitalize on it. Their match will take place later today, and expect a packed stadium to greet the two players.
