ATP Chairman Andrea Gaudenzi Proposes to Have All Governing Bodies of Tennis Work Under One Roof ⁩

Former professional player and now the ATP chairman, Andrea Gaudenzi envisions transforming tennis; Uniting all the governing and organizing bodies of international tennis (ATP, WTA, ITF, Australian Open, Roland Garros, Wimbledon, and the US Open) unite under one roof. It would improve the working efficiency of all the organizations and will also help in raising the level of the game. “Our sport can achieve great things in the future if we all work together,” he said.

Born in Faenza, Italy, Andrea Gaudenzi played on the professional circuit from 1990 to 2003. In a career spanning more than a decade, Gaudenzi won three titles and reached a career-high ranking of 18. He took over the chair of ATP chairman in 2020, succeeding Chris Kermode, who held the position since 2014.

Even though Andrea has been going through a tough phase since the time he has assumed office, the Italian still has mighty plans, which aim to take the level of international tennis to the next step. One of them is getting together all the leading governing bodies of the sport. In a recent interview with the German sports website SPOX, he elaborated the whole outline of the plan and how will it benefit the game in a long run.

The world has witnessed one of its worst phases in the past two years. First the COVID-19 pandemic and now the Russia-Ukraine war. These world disturbing incidents have also had a huge impact on the tennis world. Taking over the office in 2020, Andrea has been a close witness to these effects. Expressing himself on the part gone by years. Gaudenzi said, “The sport has seen more changes in the past two years than in the previous 20 combined.

The T7 working group came to action in March 2021; to work on the unified calendar, shared commercial offerings, sponsorships, and TV deals. The group encompassed all the major governing and organizing bodies of tennis. Working together on multiple occasions through the T7 group, Andrea compared it to his plans of merger saying, “We have worked more closely with the WTA on some marketing initiatives and also with the other major organizations through the launch of the T7 working group made up of the four Grand Slam, the ITF, WTA, and the ATP.”  

Taking the previous collaborations through the T7 working group into consideration, Andrea said, “All of this makes me very optimistic that our sport can achieve great things in the future if we all work together.

Andrea has believed that instead of working separately; the governing bodies should work together and make decisions, it can do wonders for the sport. Voicing his belief, Gaudenzi said, “In the near to mid-term future, it would be my wish to see tennis evolve towards shared leadership and governance, where seven organizations work together to make decisions and move the sport forward.

The need to have a common governing body in tennis

Even though Andrea has been expressing this belief of his for a long time. The 49-year-old has always supported his views with some solid reasons. According to Gaudenzi, this process of working has largely fragmented the decisions, which has ultimately resulted in efficiency. He also feels that this model of working acts as a disadvantage for tennis when compared to other sports and entertainment industries.

“Obviously, when we think about competing with other sports, leagues, and the entertainment giants in streaming, music, or gaming, that’s a clear disadvantage for us.”
