In the round of 16, the 21-year-old player swept aside his compatriot Michael Mmoh in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3, to reach the quarterfinals.

As the 7th-seeded participant, the Aussie breezed past the unseeded American Adam Neff in the round of 32. Later, Thompson also prevailed in his round of 16 against Denis Kudla in another straight-set match, 6-1, 6-1.
