The recent Dubai Open tournament met a short, disastrous moment when the announcer confused the winner’s name with the runner-up. It was when Ugo Humbert defeated Alexander Bublik and bagged his fifth ATP title. Despite winning the tournament, Humbert had to face a slightly awkward moment during the post-match trophy-giving moment. While Humbert took it lightly, it brought a lot of disappointment among the fans, thinking of the inadequate knowledge of the tournament organizers.

The ATP Dubai Open blunder

A reliable tennis fan shared a clip on Reddit where fans spotted the sponsor calling Alexander Bublik the tournament’s champion when he was the runner-up. However, the sponsor corrected it quickly and said, “Haha, I think I made a mistake. Well, again, congratulations to Ugo and Alexander Bublik; you have done a great job.

In the clip, fans also spotted Ugo Humbert and Bublik laughing it off. However, the tennis fraternity was still not convinced, as they found this truly disappointing.

In any tournament, it is expected that the organizers will name the participants correctly. Mixing up the winner’s name with the runner-up was not expected from a country like Saudi Arabia, which is trying its best to get involved in the main tennis scenario at the moment. However, the sponsor corrected it, and the whole confusion was solved with laughter.

How did Ugo Humbert bag the trophy at the ATP Dubai Open?

This was Ugo Humbert’s sixth ATP title win, and he did that by defeating Alexander Bublik by 6-4 and 6-3. Ugo Humbert showed a great performance since the beginning, as he also faced off against Scottish legend Andy Murray in the second round and defeated him. France’s Humbert had a tight start at the opening against Bublik.

However, he still managed to take over Kazakhstani Bublik in the tenth game before achieving a 3-1 lead in the second set. Following this victory, Ugo Humbert became the first French tennis player to reach the ATP Top 15 ranking since Gael Monfils in 2021. Delighted Humber said after the victory, “For sure, I was a bit stressed (in the final game). It was a little bit tight two or three points but I knew that it would be normal and was ready to suffer. I managed to play well in the last point.”

The sponsor’s fault in announcing the name of the ATP Dubai Open 2024 shows that the organizers truly need to pay attention to the players. They need to be more knowledgeable about the sport before dedicatedly venturing into the activities of ATP to promote the sport in their country.
