Andrey Rublev vs Sebastian Korda: Preview

Rublev began the year with a bang as he won the Hong Kong Open, the first tournament he played this season. He also reached the quarterfinal of the Australian Open after sealing a fantastic comeback against Alex De Minaur in the fourth round. De Minaur would take his revenge in the quarterfinal of the ATP Rotterdam by ousting Rublev in the quarterfinal.

In the Qatar Open, Rublev reached the quarterfinal once again but lost to Jakub Mensik in a close straight-set encounter. Here in Dubai, the Russian got past Zhang Zhizhen in the first round, overcoming the Chinese player in three sets, coming back from a set down, 6-7, 6-2, 6-4. In the round of 16, he got past Arthur Cazaux 6-4, 6-4, to set up a repeat of his Australian Open third-round match.

Korda began 2024 with a first-round exit in the Brisbane International. In the Adelaide International, the American managed to win his first two matches before getting eliminated at the hands of Jiri Lehecka, another quarterfinalist in Dubai. A similar fate found him in the Australian Open with a third-round exit. He would then face a second-round exit in the Open 13, with a first-round elimination awaiting him in Rotterdam.

In Dubai, he bagel-ed both his opponents, winning the first round against Pavel Kotov, 6-0, 6-2, and the second round against Botic van de Zandschulp, 6-1, 6-0. Evidently, he’s been extremely consistent these past few days, not having lost more than two games in a match. That said, how do they stack up against each other?

Korda vs Rublev: Head-to-Head

Rublev and Korda have played against each other three times on the ATP Tour. Their first clash came in the 2019 Miami Open, where Rublev would be pushed to two long sets, one of which ended in a tie-breaker. He ended the match with the scoreboard reading 7-5, 7-6. Their next clash came in the 2022 Gijon Open, where Rublev would once again prove too challenging for Korda, with the World No.5 winning the match with a dominant 6-2, 6-3 score.

Rublev and Korda also played against each other in the 2024 Australian Open, where Rublev once again took the win in straight sets, keeping a dominant position over Korda. Going into the quarterfinal match with a 3-0 H2H record over his American opponent, he may have the psychological advantage.

Prediction: Rublev to play in the semifinal

Both Korda and Rublev have performed fantastically in the Dubai Tennis Championships. Despite Korda’s convincing wins that brought out just how good he can be, it’s Rublev who’s been in these situations more often. The Russian has been known to step up his game whenever the situation demands it, and although his matches here have been challenging, he still has a better chance of coming out victorious.

As for the surface in Dubai, it wouldn’t really give one player more of an advantage, considering both their games are aggressive – Korda from the net and Rublev from the baseline. That being said, while Rublev has a psychological advantage, the American player will hope to get on the board in their H2H record. As a thrilling match awaits, who do you think will come out on top?
