Alexander Zverev did not have the best of years but would be looking to end the year on a high. Coming into the ATP Finals, the German player started his campaign on a high and defeated Carlos Alcaraz, a player who had the highest hopes coming into the tournament.

In a straight-set victory, he managed to defeat the Spaniard 6-7, 6-3, 6-4. However, then came the tough task of Daniil Medvedev. When it comes to his opponent, Rublev had a relatively bad campaign at the ATP Finals this year. Out of the 2 matches that he played, he wasn’t able to secure victory in either. Facing Medvedev in the first round, he managed to secure a straight-sets win. The final scoreline of the match remained 6-4, 6-2. In his second match against the Spaniard Alcaraz, he could not stand a chance either and suffered a straight-set loss with a scoreline of 7-5, 6-2.

Rublev vs Zverev: Head-to-head

Interestingly, these two players have a rich head-to-head history that dates back to 2016. Out of the 8 matches that the two have played against each other, Alexander Zverev holds a 62% win record and has bagged 5 wins while his opponent Rublev has managed to win thrice.

Their first encounter came at the ATP Masters 1000 Monte Carlo back in the year 2016. It was the round of 64 match and in a completely one-sided affair, it was Zverev who laid his hands on the victory with the final scoreline 6-1, 6-3.

On the other hand, their recent encounter came at the ATP Vienna Open this year. In a match that had all the twists and terms it was Rublev who turned things around with a three-set victory. The final scoreline of the match was 6-1, 6-7, 6-3.

What is more interesting about their head-to-head rivalry is the fact that Zverev won 5 consecutive matches between 2016 and 2021. However, these two have met each other thrice this year and Rublev has prevailed victorious on all of these occasions.

Prediction: Zverev could ensure a win here and quite possibly make his way into the semi-finals

With the form that both players have shown in this tournament, one thing is certain, both the players will not go down without putting up a fight. However, Alexander Zverev poses a slight edge over his Russian rival. It is because of the head-to-head rivalry that the two have and the advantage that Zverev has wherever he plays against Rublev.
