“I think this year is the least amount of tennis I have ever played.” American pro Taylor Fritz said last month while throwing light on his physical limitations this season. Due to his abdominal injury, the 2024 US Open runner-up has failed to compete more frequently. In events that he’s played, the world No. 4 has struggled to maintain the overall consistency. But this week, he will look to gain the lost rhythm ahead of the big clay challenge at the Roland Garros. In Geneva, Fritz will kickstart his campaign in R16 against Frenchman Quentin Halys on Wednesday. Will he succeed in making a deep run in this ATP 250 tournament? Let’s try to find out!

Taylor Fritz v Quentin Halys: Preview

Taylor Fritz’s 2025 season has been unstable since the beginning of the year back in January. At the Australian Open, he managed to enter the third round but couldn’t advance further. He lost a crunch encounter against Frenchman Gael Monfils. In Dallas, the American couldn’t impress much, crashing out in R16. Moving into the Delray Beach Open, he reached the last eight. But Spain’s Alejandro Davidovich Fokina ousted him eventually with a scoreline of 7-6(4), 7-6(5). At the BNP Paribas Open, aka the Indian Wells, Fritz was ousted in R16.

In Miami, however, the 27-year-old managed to find his form. He succeeded in entering the semis before Czechia’s teenage sensation Jakub Mensik edged him out. Going into Madrid, the American failed to maintain the consistency, facing an R16 exit. At the Italian Open, he wasn’t even able to clear the first round. Compatriot Marcos Giron ousted him in R64 with a score line of 7-6(4), 7-6(3).

Speaking of his opponent, France’s Quentin Halys’ 2025 season has been underwhelming, to say the least. Back in January, the 28-year-old couldn’t impress at the Australian Open. He was ousted early in the second round against compatriot Arthur Fils. Then at the Open Occitanie, he failed again after losing in R32 against Dutchman Jesper De Jong. At the Open 13, Halys couldn’t move past R32 after a defeat against China’s Zhang Zhizhen. The same was the outcome in Doha too.

However, Halys did gain a momentary improvement in his form. At the Dubai Tennis Championships, he succeeded in reaching the SF stage before losing to Canada’s Felix Auger-Aliassime. But the poor phase resurfaced once again in subsequent events. At the Indian Wells Masters, Miami Open, Madrid Open, and Italian Open, he crashed out in R64, R64, R128, and R128 again. Entering Geneva this week, the Frenchman started his campaign with a victory against Spain’s Jaume Munar. Despite losing the first set, Halys managed to come back and eventually advanced into R16 with a scoreline of 4-6, 6-3, 7-6(5).

Fritz v Halys: Head-to-Head

Both the players are yet to play each other in a professional ATP event. Currently, the H2H tally stands at 0-0.

Prediction: Taylor Fritz to win in straight sets

Taylor Fritz has got a much-needed edge over Quentin Halys when it comes to the singles stats in 2025. He’s managed to win 12 of his 19 encounters so far compared to the Frenchman (7-9).

Coming onto their event history, Fritz has had some experience competing at the ATP Geneva. In fact, he’s even reached the semis here on a previous occasion. It came during his event debut in 2023. He made it to the last four before losing against Grigor Dimitrov. Last season, however, he failed to go past R16 after crashing out against compatriot Alex Michelsen. On the other hand, Halys hasn’t participated in Geneva prior to this season’s edition.

When it comes to playing styles, Fritz relies a lot on his solid baseline gameplay, thanks to his powerful groundstrokes. Combine that with an effective serve and his impressive forehand. He’s also got a reliable backhand in his arsenal. Plus, his court coverage between the baseline and the net is amazing as well. Now speaking of Halys, he likes to push his opponents to the baseline while utilizing his defensive skills. He’s a great counterpuncher with a strong, two-handed backhand. Being a baseliner, he prefers to dominate matches using his strong groundstrokes.

Now considering the overall form in 2025, Taylor Fritz appears to be the favorite going into Wednesday’s face-off. The American is expected to win in straight sets against Halys.
