Retribution for World No. 3 Alexander Zverev isn’t over yet. After being disqualified from the Acapulco Open for his unruly behavior, the German has further been fined for his actions. 

Playing his first-round match in the doubles draw, Zverev had a dispute with the chair umpire over a point in the deciding set. However, the situation became heated at the end of the match when Zverev smashed the chair of the umpire with his racquet. He further went on to abuse the umpire. 

Following his outrageous act, ATP today morning released a statement stating the penalty on the 24-year-old. 

Penalizing Alexander Zverev’s outrageous act

Following his emotional outbreak, Alexander Zverev publicly apologized for his behavior soon after being thrown out from the tournament. He also personally apologized to the chair umpire Alessandro Germani. However, apologizing wasn’t enough for this unpleasant act. 

ATP today released the further penalty for the German. As per the ATP, Zverev has been fined $40,000. The official statement by the ATP read, “Following ATP’s withdrawal of Alexander Zverev from this week’s tournament in Acapulco due to unsportsmanlike conduct, the player has received the following on-site penalties; verbal abuse – 20,000 US dollars, unsportsmanlike conduct – 20,000 US dollars.”

‘He Deserves the Sanction’- Rafael Nadal’s Honest Reaction to Alexander Zverev’s Major Meltdown at ATP Acapulco

The governing body of the men’s circuit has also decided to forfeit more than $30,000 in prize money. The Association has further decided to forfeit all the ranking points earned at the ATP 500 Acapulco. 

“This represents the maximum fine per each violation. Zverev also forfeits full prize money of 31,570 US dollars (singles and doubles), as well as all ATP rankings points from the event.”

However, this is not the final penalty for Sascha. ATP has further clarified that it would take a further review of the incident. Over the completion of the investigation, Zverev could further face sanctions, which could be as high as a ban. “A further review of the incident will now follow per ATP rules,” read the ATP statement. 

The emotional outburst of Alexander Zverev

Alexander Zverev entered the doubles draw with Brazilian partner Marcelo Melo. In the first round, they faced the pair of Lloyd Glasspool and Harri Heliovaara. One set all, the match went into a third set super-breaker. 

Being 6-8 in the super-tiebreaker, Zverev indulged in a heated argument with the umpire over a point he felt should have been called ‘out’ but was called ‘in’. Zverev-Melo lost the set 10-6. Post the customary handshake between the teams, anger-filled Zverev went on smashing the chair of the umpire multiple times with his racquet, just missing the umpire’s leg. He further went on abusing the umpire.

Taking cognizance of the act, the tournament officials immediately disqualified Zverev from the singles draw as well.
