The 2023 year has been a year of ups and downs for Frances Tiafoe. The American player started the year on a high and won the United Cup. After that, a win at the ATP 250 in Houston ensured that he laid his hands on the title after a long wait of 5 years.

Then came the Stuttgart Open, where he came in as a 3rd seeded player and won the title here in Germany. However, since then, the American player hasn’t been able to stand up to the expectations. His best performance since then came at the US Open where he managed to reach the quarter-finals of the tournament, only to be defeated by Ben Shelton.

Then, a first-round exit at the Shanghai Masters and the Japan Open proved to be a major setback for him. On the other hand, his opponent, Dan Evans is also not having the best of years. His only notable performance came at the Citi Open, where he won the title, and at the Barcelona Open, where he managed to reach the semi-finals of the event. He will also be coming into the tournament with a first-round exit at the China Open and Stockholm Open.

Tiafoe vs Evans: Head-to-head

Interestingly, when it comes to the head-to-head stats, the American has a slight advantage over his Brutish rival. Out of the 7 matches played so far, Tiafoe has managed to bag 4 wins while the British player emerged victorious on 3 occasions.

Their first ever encounter came back in 2019 when the two met each other at the Delray Beach event in Florida. Back then, it was Dan who won the encounter following a 3-set encounter. Both players have their everything and in the end, it was the British player who won 3-6, 7-6, 7-5.

However, their most recent encounter was back at the Citi Open. Dan Evans yet again proved to be too strong ahead of his American rival and defeated him in straight sets with a scoreline of 6-4, 7-5. With a chance to level the head-to-head record, Evas would be willing to give his everything.

Prediction: Frances Tiafoe to take home an easy victory

One thing is certain, these two will produce one of the best matches in the tournament so far due to their rich history of narrow head-to-head encounters. While both are struggling with form at the moment, it could be anyone’s game to make. However, the experience that Tiafoe has over his rival could give him an extra advantage.
