Tennis has given countless role models for the next generation to look up to. However, Nick Kyrgios, a 27-year-old tennis star, does not share this sentiment and takes a different stance when asked about being a role model.

Together with Thanasi Kokkinakis, the Australian tennis player recently competed in the ATP World Tour Finals. But in the tournament’s opening game, the pair of the closest friends didn’t have luck on their side, and they lost.

Nick Kyrgios bites back at the role model remark

The 27-year-old tennis pro is in Turin competing in the year-end championship in the doubles event. However, when a reporter questioned Kyrgios about being an idol for the children in the crowd at this week’s ATP finals, he retaliated viciously.

The Wimbledon champion didn’t take the comment well and hit back with a sarcastic answer regarding being a role model. He said, “We’re really bad role models. We’re bad for the sport. No one loves watching us play. We’re not crowd are favorites. We’re just negative people. Yeah, so, I don’t know. I don’t think that statement was correct by you.”

Nevertheless, the American tennis player was not in the mood to snap him out of the situation and even addressed himself as a bad sportsperson. He added, “No one was there to watch us play today.” He also added that not many fans are there to watch the doubles duo play even today and pointed out the time when they both won the Australian Open at the beginning of the year.

Kyrgios and Kokkinakis searching for the ATP finals victory

The youthful doubles tennis team is aiming to win their first match of the competition after losing in the first round against Wesley Koolhof and Neal Skupski in a nail-biting encounter. To advance in the competition, they will next face Austin Krajicek and Ivan Dodig. The Tennis duo did manage to win the Atlanta Open and the Australian Open this year, though. Additionally, they have advanced to the Tokyo Open semifinals.

However, in the singles division, Kyrgios was unable to secure a certain Grand Slam triumph despite having an excellent form and reaching the semifinals of many important competitions this year.
