Roger Federer officially confirmed that he would be attending this year’s Wimbledon. While it is obvious that Federer won’t grace the courts as a tennis player, he will be spending a few days in SW19 in some capacity. There was intense speculation that he would return as a commentator, but Federer has outright denied any such rumors. Federer, though, had some really nice and encouraging words for his former rival Andy Murray.

Federer heaped praise on Murray’s challenger win at Surbiton. Murray had breezed past all of his opponents and won the title quite comfortably except in his quarter-final match against Jason Kubler, where he was stretched to three sets.

Though Murray withdrew from this year’s French Open due to his poor form, his grass court preparation has been going just as planned. Federer praised his performance in Surbiton, saying “He just won a Challenger in Surbiton last week,” Federer added. “He won that the same week as Novak got to this incredible record of 23 slams and Andy’s plugging away at Surbiton – that also deserves so much respect”.
