Holger Rune is one player who has created much buzz since 2022. The Danish youngster grew quickly and attracted millions to him. His potential was seen by renowned coaches, and many aimed to join his team. Boris Becker, the former coach of Novak Djokovic, and Severing Luthi, the former coach of Roger Federer, became his coaches over the past few months.

However, his relationship with both star coaches did not go well. After severing his bond with Luthi, he recently went separate ways with Becker less than five months into the partnership. His mother, Aneke Rune, opened up on why their partnership failed. 

Boris Becker’s prior obligations cause for split with Holger Rune

Rune announced that he and Becker will join hands in the middle of the 2023 season and will continue their partnership in 2024, aiming for more titles for Rune. However, their bond did not work well enough and Becker left his team. Speaking to the Craig Shapiro Tennis Podcast, Aneke Rune revealed that Becker could not continue working with them due to his prior obligations with Eurosport.

No, Becker already had some obligations with Eurosport,” she said. “So it was not possible for him to be there. And since we were, you know, looking for, Boris couldn’t cover all weeks anyway, so we needed someone else, and then Holger had the dialogue with Severin also, so it was, you know, easy to ask him if it could be interesting and obviously he has huge experience from Roger. So we thought, and the chemistry was good. So it looks like a perfect fit.”

Severin Luthi was hired as a coach who could step up during the time Becker was absent due to previous commitments. However, even he could not sustain with the Danish youngster’s team due to scheduling errors. After the partnership with both coaches fell through, Rune shared his thoughts about the destruction of his coaching team.

Rune opens up after coaching team debacle

In a statement shared on his Instagram story, Rune said that he found the perfect coach in his first attempt, but it is not easy now. He further said, “I have learned a lot and found out what is important for me to feel good and at the same time develop. I have big ambitions and big goals, and I need people around me who have the same visions and who I can trust to achieve my goals.”

He further said he needs to be guided by someone who can be with him all the time to maintain consistency. The Danish young gun is in a difficult position as he had to let another coach go from his team. He has also been struggling with form for the past few months. How will he cope after Becker’s exit?
