Frances Tiafoe ends United States’ long wait

With his win over Rublev, Tiafoe became the first Black man from his country to reach the semi-final of the US Open since Arthur Ashe in 1972. Thus, he ended his country’s 50-year-old drought by reaching the semi-finals. It turned out to be a special occasion for him as he did it on the court named after the legend Arthur Ashe himself.

Tiafoe was dominant right from the word go and gave Rublev hardly any breathing space. Moreover, he held his serve throughout the match which turned out to be the turning point.
