Tennis is a game that can sometimes take a great toll on players. In an interview with La SER, Juan Carlos Ferrero highlighted the challenge faced by Carlos Alcaraz. He talked about the toll of playing 77 games in a year and the subsequent mental fatigue it will have on Alcaraz. “Making the calendar shorter than what we have done this year is difficult. 18 tournaments have been played, which are quite a few, but he has played many games and that is what has led him to that level of mental fatigue,” said Ferrero in the interview.

He urged Alcaraz to prepare himself ahead of the lengthy season. Not only this, he further added that Alcaraz could not have the breaks that he wanted if he wished to be the best in the world. Ferrero then went ahead to mention that to be a top player, he would first need to build a champion’s mindset and would have to work around that.

“This is what I said the other day in an interview, he has to learn that the season is long, that it is his job and he can’t have the breaks he would like. If you want to be the best you have to act like the best and be professional all year round. ‘It is what it is and we have to accept it.'” he further added.

Ferrero acknowledged the constraints of the ATP calendar, citing obligations to participate in Masters 1000 tournaments. This would eventually make it difficult to make the season shorter.

Alcaraz, on the other hand, understands that pretty much and wishes to replicate the success that the current world number one has.

One take at a time

In a world where player rivalries dominate social media conversations, I am someone who prefers to enjoy the skills showcased on the court rather than be involved in feuds over the greatness of players. Right from my early childhood, I have been engrossed by the legendary rivalry between Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal. It turned me into a ‘Fedal’ fan and eventually, when I graduated from college, this fandom created an interest in covering their exploits on the court.
