If tennis fans remember the ‘great fall’ of Roger Federer during the Wimbledon semi-finals against Milos Raonic five years ago, the way Federer knocked out of the Championships this year would also be remembered by his fans.

Since the tournament ended, Federer underwent a third knee surgery and is slowly making progress towards making a comeback somewhere next year.

The Swiss Maestro recently made it clear that he would try and win big matches once again as his fans deserved more than what they got to see from him at SW19.

With Roger’s affiliation to grass courts being abundantly clear, Halle Open – a tournament he won ten times in his long career, had announced the initial list of players that will be play the event.

Renamed Halle Open features long-list of top players excluding Roger Federer

Now changed to Terry Wortmann Open, the grass-court tournament in Germany will feature the likes of Alexander Zverev, Daniil Medvedev, Felix Auger-Aliassime, and Karen Khachanov. The tournament revealed these names in an official press release.

Not so surprising to see the 10-time Halle Champion’s name being excluded from the list. As Federer himself pointed out, there just isn’t enough clarity at the moment regarding his comeback and a decision might be taken during April or May next year.

It’s only logical to assume that the tournament organizers at Halle will be welcoming Federer if he is deemed to fit to play ahead of the event.

The much-awaited comeback of the Swiss this year didn’t go well as he only managed to play few tournaments and focused on the grass-court season.

Federer lost to Auger-Aliassime at Halle this year

Having entered Halle as the defending champion, Federer lost in the pre-quarters to Felix Auger-Aliassime in three sets. His knee problem began at this point as he continued to play Wimbledon and reached the quarter-finals.

In their first head-to-head meeting in the last eight, the Swiss Maestro couldn’t match up to Hubert Hurkacz as the youngster proved to be too good and even bageled Federer in the third and final set.

Post this defeat, the former world no.1 was seen cheering for Team Europe at the Laver Cup held in TD Garden, Boston. With retirement questions looming ahead, it will be interesting to see how Roger Federer plans his schedule as and when he becomes fit next year on the ATP tour.
