“Can’t Really Move Much”: Novak Djokovic Reveals Reason Behind Playing at ATP Mallorca Ahead of Wimbledon Championships 2021

The inaugural grass-court event at Mallorca attracted a lot of top European players to take up the opportunity and make perfect use of the tournament ahead of Wimbledon Championships 2021. With the likes of Novak Djokovic, Daniil Medvedev and Dominic Thiem in the mix, the Mallorca Championship tournament organizers have hit a jackpot in their first year.

Both Medvedev and Djokovic have made promising starts to their respective grass-court campaigns at Mallorca. While the Russian eased past Corentin Moutet, Novak Djokovic won his doubles first-round matchup.
The Serb, who teamed up with Carlos Gomez-Herrera, saved two match points to clinch victory against Nikola Cacic and Tomislav Brkic.

“He is in love with tennis” – Novak Djokovic talks about son Stefan’s sporting interests
Ahead of his first-round doubles contest, the world number one explained the reason behind his decision to play at Mallorca. He also talked about his son Stefan and the brief practice they had a couple of days ago.
“Yeah, well, he(Stefan) was coming for a couple of days. He is in love with tennis. He is in love with different sports. He was very inspired to come and play on the grass. For him, it was a new experience. And, he likes it a lot. He likes to dive, and so forth”, said Djokovic.

Djokovic, father of two, cherished the moments he spent practicing along with his son. The Serb also pointed out that it was a conscious decision to play the Mallorca event as he wanted to spend more time with his family before entering the Wimbledon bubble.
“I wanted to spend more time with my son” – Djokovic
“It’s amazing, you know. That’s exactly one of the reasons why I came here, the week before Wimbledon. Because I wanted to spend more time with my son, with my family. Because, once you are in London, you are in kind of lockdown and you cant really move much. We are very grateful to be here”, concluded the Serb.

At the Wimbledon this year, there won’t be much competition for Novak Djokovic to win his 20th grand slam title as Rafael Nadal decided to pull out from the event and Roger Federer is struggling with lack of enough matches under his belt.
However, it’s a golden chance for several next-gen players to win their first grand slam title. With Djokovic looking more committed than ever to win go for a calendar slam, it will be interesting to see which player will try and stop him from winning the title at SW19.
