Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner are currently ruling the ATP landscape. No one seems to be able to get between their tango. Their sheer dominance is reflected in the fact that they have shared the last eight slams only among themselves. Both have captured four major titles each in 2024 and 2025. Since the French Open final in June, every slam final has become an epic duel between the current World No. 1 and World No. 2. Obviously, one would wonder: is there no one else who can enjoy Grand Slam success in the near future apart from the Spanish Magician and the Italian “machine”?

Former ATP icon and two-time slam finalist Alex Corretja recently talked to the Danish outlet Spilxperten. The former world No.2 discussed the current generation of players who can leave an impact. It seems he is massively impressed by a 22-year-old talent who has left his impression in bits and pieces, without consistency. Still, he has gotten backing from Corretja to win a slam soon.

Setting the expectations bar high for Danish player Holger Rune, Corretja mentioned that the youngster has got huge potential. So much so that he can eventually lift a major title next year. “I really hope he succeeds because I really like him. He adds amazing things to tennis, he is actually really important to tennis, but he still needs to find his way to achieve better results.” Corretja added, “I see absolutely zero reasons why Holger can’t win a Grand Slam next year–and fight for that kind of titles for the next many years.”

The ex-Spanish pro further highlighted that Rune “works so hard. He is one that I really hope will find his way in the best possible way.” Unfortunately, the Danish pro has been struggling to capture a slam so far. Earlier this season, he managed to win an ATP 500 event.

Rune beat none other than World No.1 and six-time slam champion Carlos Alcaraz, back in April. In the final, he bested the Spaniard in straight sets. While Corretja has his hopes pinned on Rune, he also thinks people should avoid drawing comparisons of him with Alcaraz or even Sinner.

Alex Corretja dismisses comparisons between Holger Rune and Carlos Alcaraz

While Holger Rune has won a Masters title, back in 2022 in Paris, he’s yet to reach the levels of Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner. Currently ranked No.11, he achieved his highest ranking two years ago when he reached the 4th spot.

But according to Corretja, there should be no parallels drawn between the 22-year-old Danish player and SinCaraz. Explaining his point, he said, “Right now, I think it’s about Holger Rune, when (he) can collect the last pieces for the puzzle. He has to figure out how to behave both on and outside the field. He must have a better understanding of his own game, but also of the opponent’s game. I don’t think there’s reason to compare him to other players like Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner.”

As of now, Rune is competing for Denmark in the Davis Cup. Against Spain’s Pablo Carreño, he gave his country a much-needed edge in the qualifiers. Once his national duties are over, he will be playing for Team Europe at the Laver Cup. Later, he’s set to compete in Tokyo, Japan, for an ATP 500 tournament.
