Carlos Alcaraz arrived in China in top shape, to mark his participation in the ATP 1000 events including the Beijing Open and the ongoing Shanghai Masters. The Spanish tennis star had a brilliant campaign at the China Open, having reached the semifinal round of the tournament after overcoming the likes of Casper Ruud and Lorenzo Musetti.

Carrying on his remarkable momentum from the previous event in China, the young ATP sensation has further secured a place in the round of 16 of the Shanghai Masters. In doing so, the 20-year-old has pulled off another amazing feat as he has now joined the elite category of players comprising Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, and Roger Federer. Let’s find out here.

The 2-time singles Grand Slam champion had a brilliant start to the outdoor hard court event taking place in Shanghai. In his first-round matchup, Carlos Alcaraz brushed aside the Frenchman, Grégoire Barrère in straight sets, 6-2, 7-5. Later, the young Spaniard locked horns with the 30th seed Brit, Dan Evans, and clinched another comfortable victory, 7-6, 6-4.

With his recent round of 32 win in China, Carlos Alcaraz has now joined the elite list involving tennis players with the most victories in Masters 1000 events during a season. It came to the public lens on Twitter when a tennis fan page, MisterOnly shared the news, “Tennis players with the most victories in Masters 1000 during a season (1990-2023/Men’s Singles): Djokovic | 39 2015, Nadal | 35 2013, Federer | 34 2006, Murray | 30 2015, Sampras | 27 1995, Edberg | 25 1990, Kuerten | 25 2000, Alcaraz | 25 2023”

Alcaraz has 25 ATP Masters 1000 wins in his bag during this season while he has established himself in the 6th position in the list. Unsurprisingly, it is the ‘Big 3’ of Djokovic, Nadal, and Federer, who are currently sitting in the top three spots with 39, 35, and 34 under their belt respectively.

After pulling off this brilliant achievement in Shanghai, a big challenge now awaits Alcaraz in the next round of the tournament.

Alcaraz will square off against a top-20 seed in the tournament

After prevailing against Evans, the young Spanish tennis sensation is now set up for a high-profile round of 16 matchup against the 18th seed, Grigor Dimitrov. Just like Alcaraz, the Bulgarian tennis star is also in incredible form, having recently outclassed big guns like Karen Khachanov and Aleksandar Vukic in the initial rounds. This is the fourth time that the ATP superstars will be facing each other, with the former world No. 3  yet to taste any success against his 20-year-old colleague.
