‘Connors Was No Angel’ – Tennis Legend John McEnroe Says People Remember Him for Who He Was Despite His Aggressive On-Court Behavior

The 80s and the 90s saw many great rivalries taking shape. Amongst them was the rivalry between John McEnroe and Jimmy Connors. The two played against each other in some of the most memorable encounters over their illustrious careers. Recently, McEnroe talked about whether his attitude overshadowed his on-court abilities while also stressing on Connors’ attitude.
During his career, McEnroe was known for his aggressive on-court behavior. He often vented his frustration when things weren’t going his way. Overall, McEnroe and Connors faced each other on 34 occasions, with McEnroe coming out on top in 20 of those matches.

John McEnroe on how people accepted his aggressive on-court behavior
During an interview, the American tennis legend was asked whether his aggressive behavior interfered with his on-court abilities. Replying to this question, he said, “Uh yes, at some point, but also I may not be sitting here talking to you and the other part of it is if I hadn’t been as good as I was, they would have said, get this guy out of here but the fact that I was is what I think is the more interesting part.”

Further, he went on to add, “Connors was no angel by the way, if people remember him, but I try to look at it as a positive now honestly I mean, there’s not a day that goes by in my life that people don’t say you cannot be serious.”

McEnroe on Serena Williams’ legacy
Recently, the 63-year-old opened up about Serena’s legacy in tennis. The 23-time Grand Slam champion retired after playing the last match of her illustrious career at the US Open.

McEnroe identified Serena as the GOAT of the GOATs. However, he also felt that someone else will come along. Last week, Serena bowed out of the US Open after losing in the third round against Ajla Tomljanovic.
