The renowned journalist, L. Jon Wertheim, recently took to his Twitter account to candidly speak about his views on the “supreme self-belief” of American amateur players in the tennis community. In doing so, he shared an obscure survey that stated how almost three out of four Americans have this belief that they could win their respective matches against a pro player, in a best-of-three-set match.

Further, it also stated female players (71%) in the amateur community are more optimistic than men. Emphasizing the younger generation (aged between 18 and 24), almost 81% of players think they could clinch a victory on the court against a pro, according to the survey. It also asserted, “More than half of American amateurs think their serve matches or surpasses the speed of the average pro.”

Kyrgios counters the disparity arguments in the tennis community

The WTA player, Coco Gauff, receiving much less prize money than her male counterpart has now become a contentious topic for many fans. At the recently concluded Citi Open, the American tennis prodigy received $120,150, whereas, the ATP player, Daniel Evans, bagged a much bigger amount ($353,445) after winning the championship match.

Thus, a lot of fans were quite irked as they voiced their opinions on the pay discrimination faced by the players in the women’s circuit. Kyrgios, on the other hand, countered their ‘pay disparity’ arguments by emphasizing the amount of $1.5 million the Wimbledon runner, Djokovic, received after his incredible campaign in London. The ‘bad boy of tennis’ further suggested how that it was much lesser than the amount ($3 million) the WTA star, Marketa Vondrousova got after clinching her first-ever title on Centre Court.
