Yesterday, Medvedev won his quarter-final match against Japanese Yoshihito Nishioka. On the same day, he also achieved another major feat in his career by becoming the new World No.1.
However, instead of celebrating the two occasions, a disturbed Medvedev showed his concern on the Russia-Ukraine crisis, appealing for peace throughout the world.
Medvedev’s appeal for peace
Medvedev has multiple reasons to celebrate the current moment. On one hand he is in the semi-finals of the ATP Acapulco Open. Whereas on the other hand, he is set to become the new World No.1 after Djokovic’s quarter-final loss in Dubai.
Daniil Medvedev: "By being a tennis player, I want to promote peace all over the world. We play in so many different countries; I've been in so many countries as a junior and as a pro. It's just not easy to hear all this news. … I'm all for peace."

However, what’s more concerning for the 26-year-old is the roaring tension between Russia and Ukraine. Post his quarter-final win against Yoshihito Nishioka, Djokovic said, “By being a tennis player I want to promote peace all over the world.”
Elaborating on his stand for peace, Medvedev said, “We play in so many different countries. I’ve been in so many different countries as a junior and as a pro. It’s just not easy to hear all this news. I’m all for peace.”
Daniil Medvedev vs Rafael Nadal head to head
Daniil Medvedev is set to take on Rafael Nadal in a re-match of the 2022 Australian Open finals. The two have met 5 times in the past, with the Spaniard leading the head-to-head race 4-1. The two first played in the finals of the 2019 ATP 1000 Masters Canada, with Nadal sweeping the match in straight sets.
The two next met in the same year at the 2019 US Open finals. Both the players displayed some high-quality action on the court, taking the match to the 5th set. Just like the previous four sets, the final set also saw both the players leaving no stone unturned. However, it was Nadal who finally struck the lead, winning the 2nd longest US Open in history.

The third meeting also took place in 2019 in the Round Robin of the Nitto ATP Finals. Just like the US Open, this tie too saw both the players play some top-level tennis, giving a treat to the eyes of all the tennis fans. Rafael won the match in three sets.
In the following year, the two again met at the Nitto ATP Finals, this time in the semi-finals. However, unlike the last three times, this time it was Medvedev who hit the bull’s eye, winning the match in three sets.
