During the course of Daniil Medvedev’s career, we have often seen emotions getting the better of him on the tennis court. Take the example of last month’s Australian Open. During his first-round match against Kasidit Samrej, Medvedev, known for his fiery temperament, had an angry outburst and smashed a camera with his racket. Further, in the very next tournament in Rotterdam, he mocked the chair umpire for time violation during his match against Stan Wawrinka. Although Medvedev went on to win both contests, his anger issues have become a common feature of his matches.

His loss of temper on the court has resulted in Medvedev facing strict action for his behavior. Nonetheless, he is finding it difficult to deal with anger issues, something that he has been facing since his childhood days. Similarly, his daughter, Alisa has also been facing a similar problem. Medvedev came up from a humble background and was taught to win at all cost early on. This was embedded in his personality and he made a candid confession about his temperament issues.

During an interview at the ongoing Qatar Open, Medvedev said, “It’s a bit like I’m bipolar, right? It’s been like that since I was very young and I see it in my daughter too. I’ve worked with people… Maybe it comes from my childhood. Maybe it’s genetic.”

Moreover, this is not the first time that Medvedev has come out in the open over his anger issues. During the ATP Finals last year, he explained his struggles on the court, saying, “I have this every day, day in, day out, since like two, three years. Every match is a struggle. Now I feel zero pleasure of being on the court. I was like, ‘Whatever, I lost the match. I don’t care’.”

Further, Medvedev often has had to face jeers from the fans inside the stadium due to his aggressive behavior on the court. A few years back, he explained why fans did not like him much.

Once a World Number 1, Medvedev’s behavior and style of play on the court isn’t taken well by many fans. As a result, he often faces jeers from the fans inside the stadium at tournaments across the globe. Even during the 2022 Australian Open final against Rafael Nadal, he was taunted by the fans in the Rod Laver Arena. Subsequently, he weighed down the reasons for the ill-treatment by the fans.

He said, “I think nationality plays a key. I can definitely see when you playing somebody from the other country, they would go for them and not for Russian, or something like this. I feel there is a lot more buzz about tennis in Russia right now. Hopefully we’ll try to get more people to go for us.”

The former World Number 1 is in Doha currently where he is playing at the Qatar Open. Medvedev has reached the quarterfinal and will face Felix Auger-Aliassime in the last-eight clash tomorrow. Can the Russian star win the title in Doha? Let us know your views in the comments below.
