John McEnroe, the ‘Superbrat’, is someone who has bags of experience in providing a well-rounded coverage for the sport. His brother, Patrick McEnroe, is no slouch either, as he is one of his brother’s on-mic rivals. But ahead of the US Open semifinal, Patrick just shared some concerning news with tennis fans, confirming that he is “back in the basement.” 

Patrick is a veteran commentator who has covered the sport for almost three decades. He joined ESPN in the 1990s and has provided them with his valuable insights ever since, invigorating fans and novices alike with the flavor of the sport. Now that he won’t be able to cover the final matches of the American Slam, he comes out with the truth on X (formerly Twitter).

John McEnroe’s brother shares bad news with tennis fans

Since the start of the tournament on August 28, Patrick McEnroe has been invaluable when it comes to covering the sport’s most iconic tournaments, i.e. the Grand Slams. Prior to the US Open, he was present in the commentary box in various tournaments throughout the year. But the younger McEnroe brother is now confined to his home as he is on his third bout with Covid-19. He shared an update with his fans on Twitter.  

“Yup, back in the basement, everybody. You all know I was here first when it all started, and now I’m back again. My third bout with COVID. Luckily, I can say that I’m feeling pretty good.

“But won’t be able to be at the US Open this weekend. Tested positive this morning. Watching Djokovic giving another masterclass against Shelton at the moment, so hope you’re enjoying the tennis. Thanks for all the well wishes,” confirmed Patrick McEnroe.

In 2020, Patrick was tested positive for the first time. Praising his wife, Melissa, for taking care of him while he and their family remained in quarantine at home, he affirmed, “Let’s get this thing. Let’s nail this thing.” After staying in isolation for 11 days straight, McEnroe admitted, “The good news is, I feel fine. My symptoms have passed. I feel really 100%.”

This comes as quite unfortunate news as John McEnroe recently announced his return to ESPN. But his absence was borne of the same unfortunate reason as his brother’s.

Elder brother John McEnroe comes back

Just two days after the US Open commenced, the ‘Superbrat’ announced, to fans’ disappointment, that he would sadly be absent from the ESPN commentary box. He was also diagnosed with Covid-19 and had to recover properly before he got the green signal to return. Now, as the tournament finals have begun, the seven-time Grand Slam champion is back in the box and sharing his insights of the final few matches.

John’s quick return is being cherished by everyone. But they will also miss his younger brother. Now, tennis fans around the country wish him a speedy recovery.
