Davis Cup 2023 – Australia vs Finland: Preview and Prediction

Australia has yet again shown why they are the real title contenders and have made their way into the semi-finals of the Davis Cup. After having secured a finals appearance last year, they would be willing to lay their hands on the title glory this time. But things would be a bit different this time around. Standing their way in the semis will be a mighty task for Finland.

With just one step away from getting into the finals, will they be able to make it through or does the Finland team have a surprise for the Aussies? Which team looks more favorable to win the match? Let’s find out!

Team Australia is all set to make their way onto another final at the Davis Cup after defeating the Czech Republic in the quarter-finals of the tournament. However, their match against the Czech did not come easy and they trailed soon after the start. In the very first match, Tomas Machac came out on top and defeated Jordan Thompson 6-4, 7-5.

After that, Jiri Lehecka faced Alex de Minaur. After breaking in the fifth game, Lehecka won the opening set 6-4. However, de Minaur came back stronger to win 7-6(2) and send the match to a decider.

The 24-year-old then began the final set, but Lehecka broke him back to even the score at 5-5. In the very next game, De Minaur gave himself back a one-break advantage before holding service to win 4-6, 7-6(2), 7-5, and level the match at 1-1. It all then came down to the decider match. Jiri Lehecka and Adam Pavlasek faced off against Matthew Ebden and Max Purcell. For the second consecutive year, the Australians advanced to the Davis Cup semifinals after winning 6-4, 7-5.

On the other hand, Finland also did not have the best of starts to their quarter-final campaign as they faced a tough Canadian side. In his first Davis Cup match in five years, Milos Raonic defeated Patrick Kaukovalta 6-3, 7-5, to give the Canadians the lead. However, it was Otto Virtanen who defeated Gabriel Diallo 6-4, 7-5 to tie the score for Finland.

In all then came down to the decisive doubles match. he and Harri Heliovaara triumphed over Alexis Galarneau and Vasek Pospisil. For the first time in the history of the country, the Finns advanced to the semi-finals with a 7-5, 6-3 victory.

Prediction: Team Australia could make it through to the finals of the Davis Cup

Team Australia has been on a whole different level when it comes to the Davis Cup. Having made their way into the semi-finals, the team led by Alex de Minaur looks in a more favorable spot to reach the finals. While Finland has also surprised everyone with their performance, it is the Aussies that many are rooting for.

However, the win won’t come easy to them as their opponents would throw in everything to stand a chance to create history and reach the finals.
