The Serbian tennis legend Novak Djokovic stepped into this year’s Wimbledon with a vision of clinching his 24th Grand Slam title. However, a 20-year-old hurdle was not going to let that happen. Carlos Alcaraz Garfia took down the legendary player in a nail-biting five-set thriller. However, was it a match that screamed Alcaraz’s victory from the beginning of the match? Apparently, the answer is no, as analyzed by the uncle of Rafael Nadal, Toni Nadal.

The Spanish tennis coach recently revealed the reason why Novak Djokovic lost the match. Had he not missed this crucial aspect, he would have had his 24th Grand Slam title in his hand.

To assume that the 20-year-old Spanish tennis sensation did not do a good job and his victory was because of Djokovic’s carelessness would be wrong. Carlos Alcaraz Garfia proved to be a challenge for Djokovic that pushed him to his extent. However, as per Rafael Nadal’s uncle and Spanish tennis coach Toni Nadal, the match could have had a different outcome. A five-set thriller led the audience to sit on the edge of their seats, however, Toni Nadal feels Djokovic could have gone home with the Wimbledon trophy.

Alcaraz had the benefit of being younger than Djokovic which undoubtedly gave him more stamina as compared to the 36-year-old. However, this was not what led Nole to miss out on his title. Toni Nadal stated in El Pais, “Although it is true that the age difference (16 years) gave the Spaniard a certain advantage, at this fifth set I thought that certainly, either player could win.”

He added, “Djokovic had a clear break point in the Murcia player’s initial service, he wasted it making a big mistake and somewhat embarrassed gave up the next game with his service.”

Djokovic had a breakpoint to get into his favor early in the fifth set. However, because of an error of judgment, he smashed the ball right into the net.

Alcaraz made the best of the opportunity

That miss eventually led the 20-year-old to grab onto the opportunity where he gained an advantage in the next game itself. Apart from that, the duo underwent a 26-minute excruciatingly long game with 32 points and 13 deuces in it. Eventually, it was Carlos Alcaraz who clinched the game by taking down Djokovic.

Looking back upon his victory, Djokovic reminisced about the close victory he had against Roger Federer in 2019. Being in those shoes himself, he wishes to lose some of those close-winning matches to make this defeat hurt a little less.
