The US Open is about to start in a couple of weeks and players are all lined up to deliver exceptional performances at this year’s event. However, before the start of the tournament, major pundits started coming up with their predictions. In a recent revelation, a former Wimbledon winner, Nielsen shared a measured perspective on the prospects of Taylor Fritz and Frances Tiafoe at the forthcoming US Open.
He revealed that while both players have the caliber to make significant progress, it would not be sufficient for them to lift the title. However, he preferred Frances Tiafoe to have a good run rather than counting his chances on Taylor Fritz.

Former Wimbledon champion backs Frances Tiafoe rather than Taylor Fritz
While acknowledging Fritz’s comfort on American hardcourts and his potential to make an impact, Nielsen remained cautious about his ability to overcome top-five players, citing a need for more diverse strategies in his game.
“Of course, he can beat them on a given day, and he’ll likely go far in the tournament because he’s comfortable on the American hardcourts. “But it would really surprise me if he wins. I don’t have high expectations for him as a player, even though he possesses many qualities and has performed well.” said Nelson in the interview.
Nielsen expressed more optimism about Tiafoe’s capabilities, noting his consistent improvement. However, he tempered expectations due to Tiafoe’s historical inconsistency in maintaining peak performance across the duration of a tournament.
Nielsen emphasized that while Tiafoe has been steadily progressing, it might still be a challenge for him to prevail in the demanding seven-match format, particularly against the elite contenders.

“I think he has been consistently improving throughout his career so far,” Nielsen continued. “I still think he lacks some consistency to compete in seven consecutive matches, especially in the best-of-five-set format. “But someone like him, who is consistently improving, performs well at home and thrives on the energy from the audience, so we shouldn’t underestimate Frances Tiafoe”

Thus, Nielsen’s analysis underscores the room for growth and refinement in both players’ games before they can be considered frontrunners for the prestigious US Open title. With the tournament about to start in a couple of weeks, it will be interesting to see who among the two makes it further ahead in the tournament. With top names like Carlos Alcaraz, Novak Djokovic, and others in the hunt for the title, American players will have to be very consistent.
