Soon after this match at the Italian Open 2019, Ruud called Kyrgios an idiot for walking off the court. The Australian later tweeted a number of things in which he targeted Ruud for being a one-surface player, i.e playing well on clay only.

However, when the Norwegian player reached the semis of the ATP Finals 2021, fans mocked Kyrgios for his old tweet. He played well but lost to Daniil Medvedev in the semis.
