What does it take to become a legendary player? Is it just skills and hard work, or is it something more? Former American tennis pro Andre Agassi has the answer. While discussing his admiration for rising star Carlos Alcaraz and his potential, Agassi emphasized how beyond hard work, other crucial factors also contribute to a player’s greatness in their field. So, what did he say?

Agassi had an interesting message for Carlos Alcaraz. The Spaniard has won four major titles in his career including two Grand Slams this season, one at Roland Garros and the other at Wimbledon. Not just that but Alcaraz’s performance this season impressed the fraternity expressing his potential to join Tennis Big Three in the future. However,  former American player Andre Agassi has an interesting twist in this matter.

Alcaraz defends like Novak [Djokovic], has power and spin like [Rafael] Nadal, and has hands and finesse like [Roger] Federer, But just because he has the best of all three doesn’t mean he can do what they did. Decision-making, injuries and luck… there are so many things,” said Agassi at the  2024 TiE Global Summit. His statement didn’t counter Alcaraz’s potential to match the legendary three players of tennis but he added the factors like injury, fitness, and form also contribute to a player’s success. Agassi isn’t wrong. Injuries are one of the biggest reasons behind a player’s retirement. Look at Rafael Nadal, whose series of crucial injuries forced him to retire. Nadal exited the 2016 French Open after tearing his left wrist’s tendon. It impacted his career greatly. He also suffered from a hip injury and went through a critical operation that reduced the potential of his form. Agassi’s statement highlighted this fact explaining how luck is a factor in becoming a legend.

The American former pro also revealed his preference for Alcaraz in a straightforward revelation. When asked about the players with the best speed, Agassi said, ” It’s the transition people that you have to worry about, right? And when it comes to that, like the fastest guys on the tour now, three guys unquestionably: Alcaraz, de Minaur and Tommy Paul, And out of those guys, I would worry most about Alcaraz, second Tommy Paul, third de Minaur. Because they are fine being on defense but they are going to try to turn that point around unquestionably. So like, I go Alcaraz.”
