Carlos Alcaraz Garfia is all the rage in tennis at the moment. Not only did he win Wimbledon, he also beat Novak Djokovic in the final, an astounding feat. Owing to his efforts, many fans of other players have switched allegiances and believe Alcaraz is the next big tennis player. Jimmy Connors is one of those individuals and even believes that the young Spaniard can go on to break the record of Pete Sampras.

Although rather new to the scene, Alcaraz has added his name to the list of many records. But one of those records puts him above the big three of the sport. He achieved it right before he began his Wimbledon stint.

Carlos Alcaraz can go over American tennis legend

Jimmy Connors is a legend of ATP, by all means. If one were to look only at the number of titles won, Connors would stand at the top with 109 singles titles. After his retirement, the American player has divulged into other ventures. He spoke on the ‘Advantage Connors’ podcast, which he runs with his brother, Brett Connors.

In a recent edition of the podcast, Connors believes that Carlitos can win 15 grand slams, breaking the record of Pete Sampras. “If Carlos Alcaraz plays until he is 33. So, he has got 13 years. Let’s just say he plays for 12 more years, that is 48 more slams. And if he doesn’t get too full of himself, I would say 15.”

Connors then added that it could all collapse if he lets his hubris get the better of him. “That is if he doesn’t think he doesn’t have to go out and work hard and it’s gonna come easy. He needs to continue what he’s doing now and looks like he will. He has that passion, that smile, that excitement, and that feel for what he’s doing.”

The American legend has made it clear that Alcaraz needs to maintain his passion. His recent record could be a sign that the Spanish player is maintaining his speed.

Carlitos stands above the big three in one record

Younger players tend to have more energy and stamina to play. Alcaraz showed it to be true when he entered the Queen’s Club Championship right after the French Open final. Alcaraz won his first grass tournament at the ATP 250 event. His win was remarkable for more than one reason as he broke the record of Djokovic, Roger Federer, and Rafael Nadal.

It took Federer four years, Rafa five years, and Djokovic six years to win their first title on grass. But Alcaraz managed to win his first grass championship in just two years. While there is much hype around him, he keeps proving why he deserves to be praised to such an extent.
