Not many can deny the greatness of Roger Federer. The Swiss Maestro’s achievements have shown his intensity and passion for the sport, which have also helped him launch his brand. People, however, seldom talk about the impact his wife, Miroslava “Mirka” Federer, has had on the ATP great. Dutch coach, Sven Groeneveld, once revealed how Mirka helped Federer reach heights never seen before in tennis.

When Roger’s coach, Peter Carter passed away in 2002, due to an accident, the Swiss Maestro was inconsolable. As per the former number 1, Carter was the reason he abandoned his brash behavior. Due to the Australian coach, Roger was able to mold his personality into what it is today.

The unseen impact of Mirka Federer on Roger Federer

In ‘The Roger Federer Effect’, many personalities close to and inspired by the Mighty Federer were interviewed. Sven Groeneveld, who became the coach of the Swiss national team in 1997, revealed the impact that Mirka had on her husband. Groeneveld stated that Roger looked for stability in everything. He gave the example of Severin Lüthi, who was the coach of Roger since 2007 till his retirement.

When his former coach, Peter Carter, passed away in 2002, Roger was impacted heavily. While it did affect him to a great extent, Groeneveld believes that the support provided by Mirka helped him recover.

Obviously the death of Peter Carter had a big impact on him. But I think the biggest impact, you would have to say that is Mirka.”

He further explained that Mirka, being more mature, was able to positively influence the tennis great. The death of his coach left him grief-stricken. But the support of Mirka for Roger helped him bounce back from the pain of loss. 

Groeneveld explained, “Mirka was a couple of years older; obviously as a female, she was more mature and she just was able to have a really, really positive impact on Roger, on the court and off the court and gave Roger almost like a security blanket. That’s what he needed. He needed this feeling that people were looking after him, especially after the loss of Peter Carter.”

Mirka’s efforts paid off as Roger’s glorious tennis career and image led him to become the only billionaire tennis player in the world. The deals he could not have acquired if not for his dominance on the court. From Groeneveld’s point of view, if Mirka was any different, Federer might’ve fallen from the cracks.
