The US Open, known for producing new champions, especially on the ATP side, has found an emerging Spanish youngster as its champion this year. Carlos Alcaraz, coached by tennis legend Juan Carlos Ferrero, won the final Grand Slam event of the year and proved that he is the player to beat for senior professionals like Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic.
However, a giant victory will usually be followed by a slew of heart-breaking losses and Alcaraz’s case is no exception to this. The young Spaniard struggled to find top rhythm in the follow-up events to ATP Finals and recently withdrew in his quarter-final match against Hoger Rune.
This withdrawal raised questions about his participation in the year-end championships in Turin. Even Alcaraz himself admitted that he would be doubtful for the marquee event in Turin. Now, confirming the fears, Carlos dropped an unfortunate announcement on Twitter, explaining the nature of his injury to fans.
After my withdrawal yesterday and having been evaluated by my medical team, @drlopezmartinez and @JuanjoMoreno_M, unfortunately this is the result of my injury: an internal oblique muscle tear in the left abdominal wall with an estimated recovery time of six weeks. pic.twitter.com/MbVHhJF1Oe

From Alcaraz’s message, the six-week recovery time means that his glorious 2022 ATP season is over. Here is wishing Carlos Alcaraz a speedy recovery before he starts his Australian Open stint next year.
