Victoria Azarenka turned pro in 2003 and is still going strong in the tennis circuit. In her latest appearance in the 2020 US Open, she stunned #5 seed Aryna Sabalenka 6-1, 6-3 to progress to the third round. During the immediate reaction of her victory, Azarenka hinted at how her son Leo might grow up to follow her footsteps!

Supermom Victoria Azarenka is truly glowing with her game in the flushing meadows. Moreover, she came into the tournament as the winner of the 2020 Western and Southern Open, which might be giving her a confidence boost.

Azarenka dominated the women’s game and won the first ATP tournament after the pandemic caused havoc in the calendar schedule. After the finals, there was one more thing that made the 31-year-old rejoice, and that is watching her son play the sport that she loves.

In her post-game on-court interview after Round 2, the two-time grand slam champion detailed how she absolutely loves watching her little kid play. “I went on the court with Leo and I fed him some balls and he was excited,” Azarenka began.

“He had his racket and he was like, ‘Like this mama? Like this mama?’ And it was so cute,” she exclaimed. “But he doesn’t let me film him. So I can’t show his talent. I want to be the proud mom, who can like show my son’s talent, but he doesn’t. He just knocks off my phone. So this will have to wait.”

It is incredibly heartwarming to see athletes like Victoria Azarenka juggling motherhood and focusing on advancing further in a grand slam. It is no easy task, and the Belarusian opened up about it after registering a sparkling victory over compatriot, Aryna Sabalenka

Azarenka’s son Leo was born in 2016. Before the birth of her child, Azarenka had earned plenty of reverence in the tennis circuit and had established herself as one of the best to ever do it. However, she won her first title in her career since becoming a mother, in the 2020 Western and Southern Open.

Justifying your duties as a mother and providing ample focus to your tennis career is a very challenging task, and Azarenka knows that it is a tough ask. “Well, there is a lot that goes into it in terms of balancing, you know, a lot of things, and juggling two things,” she said. “But identifying myself or other players just as mothers, I think that’s not the only thing that we are.

The former World No. 1 put forth the fact that motherhood is just another identity that women receive in life. “But identifying myself or other players just as mothers, I think that’s not the only thing that we are. I think we are part of, you know, being a mother, we are also tennis players. We are also women who have dreams and goals and passions,” Azarenka added.

“My life just began when I became a mother. I’ll say that really openly,” the 31-year-old mentioned. With that being said, Azarenka has her hopes set high in the 2020 US Open. She’s already entered the third round, but how far can she carry confidence in the tournament?
