Dominic Thiem was once considered one of the hottest prospects in men’s tennis. The Austrian had grabbed eyeballs when he lifted the US Open crown in 2020, and that was heralded as the moment when the next-gen would really kick off. He defeated Alexander Zverev of Germany in a five-setter thriller to win his maiden Grand Slam title.

Moreover, he was ranked as high as Number 3 in the same year. He won several titles before lifting the US Open crown. However, lately, the Austrian has been suffering from a wrist injury which has kept him away from the Tour since June last year.

Dominic Thiem took to the clay courts to begin his preparations for his first tournament of the 2022 season. However, he was only able to train for five minutes due to problems with his wrist. As a result, his start at the ATP 250 tournament in Cordoba is in doubt.

The Austrian’s team later confirmed that the fresh injury had nothing to do with the old wrist problem and the comeback was still on. At the Cordoba Open, which will be played on the clay courts, Thiem would be the second seed behind the local favorite Diego Schwartzman.

During the Mallorca Championships in June last year, the 28-year-old had injured his wrist against Adrian Mannarino of France. This forced him to retire in the first round of that tournament. The Austrian has been out of action since then. Moreover, his rankings have taken a serious beating as a result, and he has dropped out of the top 10.
