Dominic Thiem’s Father to Lead Austrian Team at ATP Cup 2021

The ATP Cup 2021 is already creating a buzz in the tennis circles, considering that it will feature some of the top players from around the world. The tournament is likely to take place from February 1 to February 5, 2021. As usual, the World No.3 Dominic Thiem will be the player to watch out for his side Austria in the ATP Cup 2021.

The US Open 2020 winner is not alone this time as his dad and mentor, Wolfgang Thiem, will be leading the Austrian side. He has been Thiem’s backbone and his presence will surely give him tremendous support and motivation.

There has been a shift in the tournament’s dates due to the coronavirus pandemic. However, the overall structure and format remain the same.

The tournament will take place at Melbourne Park in Australia. The only twist is that instead of 24, only 12 teams will be fighting for the title in this edition.

Dominic Thiem, Dennis Novak, and Philipp Oswald are the ones who will most probably represent Austria. Thiem’s dad will be the captain and will look forward to make Austria win their maiden ATP Cup title.

The maiden edition of the ATP Cup turned out to be a nightmare for Austria. They didn’t even qualify for the quarters as they had a 1-2 win-loss ratio in the round-robin matches. Serbia emerged as the winner of the ATP Cup 2020 after splendid performances from Novak Djokovic and Co.

Just like Serbia, Dominic Thiem also had a poor show at the ATP Cup 2020. He lost his first match against Borna Coric which made it quite tough for him. However, the Austrian didn’t give up and won his next match against Diego Schwartzman.

The last match was a do-or-die match for Thiem and he tried his level best to go the extra mile. However, he lost to Hubert Hurkacz in a close encounter which ended Austria’s run in the tournament.

The problems are no less for Austria this time. Jurij Rodionov and Sebastian Ofner will most probably not play in the ATP Cup. If they manage to qualify for the Australian Open, they’ll play one of the 250 events.
