When Roger Federer’s chaotic persona stunned everyone
Over the course of his glorious career, the 20-time Grand Slam champion has gracefully displayed his calm demeanor on the court. However, at the same time, the former world number one has also been involved in altercations on the court, such as the drama that happened during the 2009 US Open.
During the final with Juan Martin del Potro, the Swiss player got angry and accused the umpire of being biased towards his opponent. While the third set was going on, Juan’s return went outside the court, and the chair umpire, Jake Garner, at that time gave a point to Federer, which was further challenged by the Argentinian. However, his opponent’s challenge of the then-regulation time annoyed Federer, and he got into an argument with the umpire.
He said, “Don’t tell me to be quiet, OK? When I want to talk, I talk alright. I don’t give a s**t what he said. I’m just saying he waited too long to call. Don’t f*****g tell me the rules. I was not allowed to challenge 2 matches ago after 1 second.”
Along with that, he also brought up the thought regarding how he was never given an opportunity to challenge beyond a 2-second delay, but here Potro was able to pull up the challenge even after a 10-second delay.
