Amid the chaos, the American tennis legend Jimmy Connors shared a captivating personal encounter with these dual disasters on his Spotify podcast, Advantage Connors. Connors, renowned for his resilience on the tennis court, narrated his decision not to succumb to panic as the earthquake alarms blared.

“We got some rain, which we need and in this time of year boy, it’s welcome because we’re starting to get some pretty good temperatures for us in you know in the 80s and so forth,” Connors mentioned on his podcast. Recalling the alarms blaring, he said, “the alarm come was up on everybody’s phone sitting around saying, “Duck! Take cover! there’s an earthquake!””
But Connors, showing his characteristic determination, decided to stand his ground. “You can go, but I’m staying right here,” he quipped.
Connors also talked about how unbelievable it was that the hurricane and earthquake happened together. “For that to happen at the same time, the, you know, the hurricane and then the then the earthquake and, and everything, what are the odds?” He sounded amazed and surprised by how unusual it was, but also understood the difficult situation. He mentioned watching the sad scenes on TV and feeling for those who were affected.
In a touching twist, Connors shared a personal link to the earthquake, saying, “Your mommy was out of town and on her way back. She called me and asked, ‘Did you feel it?’ I replied, ‘Nah, didn’t feel much.’ Yet, the quake was just 30 or 40 minutes away – quite close.”
