The Cincinnati final between Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz was one for the history books. Both players displayed a masterclass and eventually it was the master who edged past the apprentice. Despite displaying on-court anger for a better part of the match, both champions showed a touch of class in the end. They acknowledged each other in their respective post-match interviews and also their team members. However, a certain part of Alcaraz’s interview was quite heartwarming.

A brutal three-set final, clocking just under four hours, is bound to give enough moments for the fans to talk about. This encounter lived up to all the hype and somehow managed to exceed it.

As per the traditions, the runner-up speaks before the winner. Alcaraz started his speech by appreciating Djokovic’s greatness. He then went on to talk about the crowd and his team. Within his team, the Spaniard dropped a special message for his brother, who was sitting in the box.

In an already emotional night, Alcaraz almost teared up while speaking of his brother. He said, “I have my brother here as well. It’s great to have you here, supporting me every day. To make me be a better person, learning from you as well. Thank you for being with me.” The 20-year-old’s brother, Jaime Alcaraz, is not always spotted in his box. However, Jaime was not going to miss out on Alcaraz’s all important clash against arguably the greatest.

It wasn’t the only time Alcaraz felt overwhelmed last night. He teared up right after the match as the final few tight points did not go in his favor.

Emotions get the better of Alcaraz

The harsh side of the sport was pretty visible yesterday. When Djokovic celebrated one of his best victories with wild celebrations, Alcaraz was in agony. Despite being a two-time major champion, this Masters title was extremely important for the Spaniard. He failed to control his emotions and teared up a bit before the interview. It was quite heart-wrenching to see him broken after the match. But it also showed his hunger and desire to keep winning every tournament.
