Andy Murray is one of the greatest British athletes of all time. His tennis prowess is unquestionable, and he could have reached even greater heights in his illustrious career had it not been for his hip injury and multiple surgeries. Murray is on a roll this grass season, after skipping the French Open to prepare for Wimbledon championships. He has won ten matches in a row and will be itching to have a deep run in Wimbledon. However, a certain aspect of the championships is making him feel quite unsettled, which is that only children above 5 years of age are allowed inside the court.

This would mean that out of Andy Murray’s 4 kids, only one would be able to see their father play and the rest of the three will miss the golden opportunity. Murray rues this fact and feels that Wimbledon which prides itself on tradition must be flexible and change this rule.

Andy Murray’s beautiful family consists of his wife Kim Sears, whom he had known for 17 years. They were teenage friends and together they have four kids- Sophia, six years old, Edie four years old, two-year-old son Teddie, and a fourth child – another girl – whom they welcomed in March 2021.

So, Murray naturally feels that he as a father gets that extra motivation while playing in front of his kids. But unfortunately, Wimbledon rules state thus:

  • Children over five and under 16 are welcome, provided they are accompanied by an adult at all times and have their own seat.
  • Children under five are not allowed into the Show Courts (Centre, No.1, No.2, No.3, Court 12, Court 18).

As this is the case, only one of Murray’s children will be eligible to witness her father play. A disconcerted Murray said, “Is it time for a campaign to change Wimbledon’s age limit? Obviously, I mean they are allowed in the grounds but not on the courts. They actually have a nice creche and stuff and places for the kids to hang out, which isn’t the case at loads of tournaments. But I am sure they would be happier being at home rather than sitting in a crèche in a player lounge.”

Thus, Murray wants this stringent rule to be eliminated so that it benefits all viewers who come with their kids to watch the match.

How far can Murray go at this year’s Wimbledon?

Murray, an owner of 3 grand slam titles, 2 back -to- back Olympic singles gold medals, and winner of 46 ATP tour titles is always a potential threat at any tournament. But his fitness and subsequently his dip in form, have shattered his prospects recently. But then, coming from a 10-match winning streak and him feeling really positive on the court by his own admission, one can expect some great exploits from him. But Murray would hope that Wimbledon relaxes its rules so that his children could see him play.

Wimbledon is probably the most prestigious event in tennis. But sometimes, the tradition is too stringent out there. That makes us feel why it is so tradition-bound more than player friendly.
