John McEnroe talks about his issues with the pickleball umpires
Former tennis star John McEnroe, who was once known for his fierce presence on the tennis courts, is now facing similar challenges in his new sport of pickleball. The 64-year-old, who has won seven Grand Slam singles titles, recently expressed his frustration with the pickleball umpires, who he said were slowing down his game and interfering with his rhythm. Pickleball requires the server to announce the score before each serve, and the receiver must wait until the score is called before returning the serve.
This can cause delays and interruptions in the flow of the game, especially for players like McEnroe, who are used to serving quickly and aggressively. Caught in a recent conversation, McEnroe revealed his frustrated thoughts on the umpire interruptions during the match. He said, “You know they insist on calling the score and making you wait so you’re not allowed to serve even if you’re ready to serve. I thought I was finally done with the umpire s**t, come on.”
The reporter asked him if he liked to play at his own pace and they didn’t allow him. McEnroe replied, “You understand that right. You know play with my pace you know I get out there and I’m ready to go and I’m about to serve, one more I’m ready to go and I’m about to serve, ‘One more Mr Mag’.” While the former tennis star shared his experience of encountering difficulties with the rules and regulations of the sport, they surely stand to be different from that of tennis.

McEnroe’s shared love for pickleball and tennis
John McEnroe, after his prolonged involvement in pickleball, also talked about its popularity compared to tennis. “My buddies like to play [pickleball] with me and it’s an equalizer, so that was how I started playing originally,” McEnroe said, during an interview earlier this year. “And then all of a sudden during the pandemic, everyone was like, ‘Pickleball.’ And I’m like: ‘What? What about tennis?'”

McEnroe mentioned that he still loves tennis and considers it the best racket sport in the world. Along with that, he also enjoys the easier dynamics of pickleball. He said pickleball is easier to learn and play than tennis, but it also requires strategy and skill. “When I compare it to tennis, you see athleticism that is incredible on the men’s and women’s side,” McEnroe said, “so I look at it as the king of all racket sports. Everything else is below it, it’s just a question of how much below it?” As the legend shared his thoughts about pickleball and its rules, he targeted the statement toward making the sport better, as it still is in the development stage.
