Britain’s golden boy, Andy Murray, made a remarkable comeback to the court at the 2021 Wimbledon Championship. Dealing with a prolonged injury, the former World No. 1 looked like he was going to settle for a life away from the sport. However, he won hearts and blew minds as he made his return in the English tournament and cruised past his opponents.

Feeling a mixed bag of emotions, fans were stunned by his exuberant performance in the first two rounds of the competition. However, his dream run soon met its end, as a tired Andy bowed out of the tournament, losing in straight sets to his young counterpart, Denis Shapovalov.

As Andy Murray left the court after his defeat, his laid-back performance raised many questions. Regardless, the Englishman hasn’t stopped dreaming, and will soon represent his country at the 2020-2021 Tokyo Olympics. As the Olympic Gold medalist prepares to write history yet again, his former coach, Alex Corretja, believes that Murray has nothing to prove and should only focus on having a good time in Tokyo.

“He should enjoy everything about this Olympics. No one else has two gold medals in his pocket already, so he has nothing to prove,” Corretja said.

A couple of years ago, Andy suffered a career-threatening hip injury that made any kind of movement look impossible. Hence, even competing at the level he is, is an unbelievable achievement in itself. Therefore, Corretja believes Andy should just enjoy himself and relish this dream comeback. “This is the first time he can go there and enjoy what is happening around him. It is nearly a miracle that he is there because a couple of years ago, it looked like he was finished,“ he said.

Corretja feels Andy is still an opponent that many fear, despite his recent setbacks. He said, “No one would want to see Andy Murray next to them in the draw and winning another medal would be a dream.”

Corretja wishes his former prodigy doesn’t focus much on winning and enjoys his unbelievable feat. “He should be just super happy to represent his country again and just have as much fun as you can. There is no pressure. Go to the Olympics, enjoy it and then he can decide what happens after that,” Corretja said.

Is it time to bid tennis goodbye?

Ever since Murray’s exit from the Wimbledon Championship, speculations of retirement have been on the rise. However, if it is time for Andy to hang up his boots, fans will wish he bids farewell in a fashionable style; Notably, by bagging yet another accolade to his name. Corretja feels otherwise, as he believes that the former World No. 1 has had a glorious career already. 

“He has nothing to prove… Everything that happens at this point in his career is just a gift… He should go there, enjoy everything about the Olympics,” Alex said.

As Andy Murray dons the proud colors of his country, roaring fans are sure to back him for yet another gold.
