On Sunday’s Wimbledon final, the whole tennis universe was treated to some phenomenal tennis action with two of the most incredible athletes of the sport. Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic played an impressive final with the result of the match being unpredictable till the end. But eventually, it was Alcaraz who came through with some amazing tennis of his life during the clutch moments to seal the deal.

While the odds were stacked quite heavily against Alcaraz, he chose to focus only on the competition and managed to beat the 23-time grand slam champion Djokovic, 1-6,7-6,6-1,3-6,6-4. Before the match began, there were some that were mocking Alcaraz on social media, saying that he had little or no chance to win. But their predictions fell flat. Despite being the world no.1, Alcaraz wasn’t considered the favorite going into the final. Part of the reason was the opponent he was facing and not many trusted his potential on the grass. But Alcaraz let the racquet do the talking, and the rest is history. Former world no.1 Andy Roddick, who is one of the very few players who has a positive head-to-head record against Djokovic, has criticized some ignorant fans for giving no chances to Alcaraz.

Roddick took a dig at them for deriding Alcaraz. A Twitter account named ‘Tennis Capper’ ridiculed Alcaraz, with these words, “Can’t believe people had Alcaraz had people winning lol”. Roddick lashed out at that with a tweet of his own that read, “My favorite is the condescending lol at the end…..people who don’t understand how hard it actually is are normally the first to be flippant when talking about the elite”

Thus yesterday’s win served as a big blow to the pomposity of these people. Alcaraz proved to be just too good not to be taken seriously.

Just how good is Carlos Alcaraz and why it was a bad idea to underestimate him

Both Novak Djokovic and Daniil Medvedev have admitted that Carlos Alcaraz is the deserved no.1. And he has proved his naysayers wrong by winning this Wimbledon in some style beating, probably the Greatest Of All Time. Djokovic says that Alcaraz is a complete player. He is an amalgamation of Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and himself, according to him.

In fact, Djokovic says in a startling admission that he had never played anyone as good as him. He says, “I haven’t played a player like him ever, to be honest. I think people have been talking in the past 12 months or so about his game consisting of certain elements from Roger, Rafa, and myself. I would agree with that.”

So it was not a good idea to underestimate him. It was not wise to sound as though it would be a cakewalk for Djokovic. That sounded arrogant and disrespectful to the young champion.
