Casper Ruud reached his first Masters 1000 semifinal at the 2020 Rome Masters, where he was beaten by the World No. 1 Novak Djokovic. He next played a Masters level semifinal at the 2021 Monte Carlo Masters, losing to Andrey Rublev. He last played a Masters semifinal at the 2021 Madrid Masters, losing to Matteo Berrettini.

Keeping all the losses in mind, Ruud hopes to learn from those losses and use them to reach his first Masters final in Miami. “Let’s see if I can take what I have learned from the three previous semi-finals where unfortunately I lost all of them and see if I can turn it around and make the fourth time the lucky charm,” Ruud asserted
